Sometime this weekend (or maybe even by tonight) in a theatre somewhere in America a person will buy a movie ticket to see Bridesmaids and that ticket will take the domestic box office tally of Bridesmaids over the domestic box office tally of Knocked Up.

Now why is this significant?

It’s significant because nobody believed that this would happen. Nobody believed that a bunch of funny women could best the stunted male comedies that Judd Apatow (who produced Bridesmaids) is best known for. Keep in mind that Knocked Up had been Judd Apatow’s top grossing film…until now. The man who created a new genre of the nerdy misogynistic boy/men which flourished after the success of Knocked Up has seen that genre bested by, yes, women.

But now that women are kind of in the drivers seat (not completely since Apatow is the producer and Paul Feig is the director), I say BRING IT ON. I say women should ride this wave as far as it can go. I say women producers, writers and directors should pitch the hell out of female comedy projects where the women act a little liberated or in Hollywood speak — raunchy. While I don’t think that a new genre will be created (because wedding comedies are really not a step forward if we want to be honest), but I smell that there is a loosening on the hold on films about women.
