The 2021 Locarno Film Festival is set to pay tribute to Gale Anne Hurd. The “Terminator” producer and screenwriter will be honored with the Raimondo Rezzonico Prize, which is awarded to “a producer who epitomizes the indie ethos.” Variety confirmed the news.
Hurd co-wrote “Terminator” with director James Cameron. Her many producing credits include “The Walking Dead” and its spinoff “Fear the Walking Dead,” “Armageddon,” and “Aliens.” Her company, Valhalla Entertainment, has an overall deal with Universal Cable Productions “to develop new television and digital programs,” the source details. She has a series based on Charlize Theron-starrer “Æon Flux” in the works. She produced the 2005 pic about an assassin.
“Gale Anne Hurd has revolutionized our conception of what action cinema looks like,” said Locarno Artistic Director Giona A. Nazzaro. He added, “In a domain where the male gaze ruled supreme, she imposed a completely new, explosive, and engaging sensibility.” He praised Hurd for “playing with and re-writing the rule books for genres from sci-fi to action, not forgetting adventure and drama,” and emphasized that she’s “played a decisive role in shaping mythologies” and “left an indelible mark on Hollywood and on the collective imagination.”
Hurd will receive the career achievement award on August 7 during a gala that will include screenings of “The Terminator” and “Dick,” a 1999 teen comedy inspired by the Watergate scandal starring Michelle Williams and Kirsten Dunst. Hurd will also be a keynote speaker at the Locarno Pro StepIn think tank held on August 5. She’ll share her experiences of working as a woman in Hollywood at the industry event.
“Carol” and “Boys Don’t Cry” producer Christine Vachon is among the previous recipients of the Raimondo Rezzonico Prize.
Now celebrating its 74th edition, Locarno Film Festival is slated to take place in-person August 4-14.
