A Georgia O’Keeffe painting called Jimson Weed/White Flower №1 (below) has set a new auction record for women artists.
The 1932 artwork was purchased for $44.4 million (you read that right) at Sotheby’s. It was sold by the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum in Santa Fe, New Mexico, to pad its acquisitions fund.
The auction price was three times the sales estimate and far surpassed the previous auction record set by a woman painter, the $11.9 million that a Joan Mitchell artwork commanded.
Hooray for appreciating female artists and, uh, for really, really rich people, I guess.
