Gia Coppola has booked her next gig. She’ll follow up her 2013 directorial debut “Palo Alto” with “Mainstream,” Variety reports. Described as an “eccentric love triangle and a cautionary tale of preserving your identity within the fast-moving internet age,” the film will star Andrew Garfield, Maya Hawke, Nat Wolff, and Jason Schwartzman.
Hawke, the daughter of Ethan Hawke and Uma Thurman, earned raves for her on-screen debut in “Little Women,” PBS’ miniseries adaptation of Louisa May Alcott’s beloved novel. She played Jo March. The actress has since signed on for a recurring role in “Stranger Things'” upcoming third season. Hawke will also have a role in Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” set against the backdrop of the Charles Manson murders of 1969.
Coppola co-wrote the script for “Mainstream,” which is scheduled to begin filming later this year. She launched her career in photography. Her first feature, coming-of-age ensemble drama “Palo Alto,” starred Emma Roberts, James Franco, and Wolff, among others.
Sofia Coppola is the writer-director’s aunt. “Being a woman I don’t think I would have considered doing filmmaking and photography if I hadn’t seen her doing it,” she’s said of the “Beguiling” helmer. “[Sofia] stayed true to who she was and it made me think I could do it in a way that was true to me and not have to pretend I was this big, strong male director.” You can check out Coppola’s tips for aspiring directors at Dazed.
