Gina Prince-Bythewood is taking on another comic adaptation. Already signed on to helm “Silver & Black” based on Marvel characters Silver Sable and Black Cat, the director has been tapped to bring “The Old Guard” to the big screen. According to Variety, the comic’s creator, Greg Rucka, will pen the script.
Set for release in 2019, the Skydance pic tells the story of Andromache of Scythia and the rest of a “small covert group of immortal mercenaries who must fight to keep their team together when they discover the existence of a new immortal and their extraordinary abilities are exposed.”
“Every project I’ve done has been a fight, but you just need one yes. Remembering that gets you off the floor, when you’re getting a thousand no’s,” Prince-Bythewood has said. The multi-hyphenate often says she writes what she wants to see. “I just distinctly recall never being able to go to the theater and look up on the screen and see myself,” she explained.
Prince-Bythewood’s last feature, Gugu Mbatha-Raw-starrer “Beyond the Lights,” was released in 2014. Her other film credits include “The Secret Life of Bees” and “Love & Basketball.” She co-created “Shots Fired,” a 10-part police drama that aired on Fox in 2017, and helmed the pilot of Marvel series “Cloak & Dagger” for Freeform earlier this year.
