Well, that was fast! Gina Rodriguez is already putting her deal with CBS to good use. According to Deadline, a project from Rodriguez and her I Can and I Will Productions is on its way to Hulu.
The project in question is a television adaptation of Meg Medina’s YA book “Yaqui Delgado Wants to Kick Your Ass,” the source writes. Now in development, the series “tells the story of a diverse, vibrant Brooklyn community confronting bullying, racial tensions, and questions of identity.”
Dailyn Rodriguez (“Queen of the South”) penned the script and is exec producing with Gina Rodriguez, Eugenio Derbez, and Ben Odell. Jessica Pavao of 3Pas and Emily Gipson of I Can and I Will are producers on the series, and Medina is a consulting producer.
Deadline writes that 3Pas and their partners brought the project to Gina Rodriguez “because they felt it would resonate with the actress, who has campaigned against bullying and has shared her experiences with [bullying].”
“Yaqui Delgado Wants to Kick Your Ass” has received the Pura Belpré Award, the Cybils Fiction Award, and the International Latino Book Award, Deadline details. Medina is one of CNN’s 10 Visionary Women in America, and was named as an Author to Watch by Latino Stories.
Dailyn Rodriguez’s previous TV credits include “The Night Shift,” “Lie to Me,” and “Ugly Betty.”
As we’ve written, this is just one of the many projects on Gina Rodriguez’s plate. In addition to the multi-year deal with CBS, the “Jane the Virgin” star is working on her first book and will appear in the upcoming films “Sharon 1.2.3.” and “Annihilation.”
Rodriguez’s I Can and I Will — which is “committed to promoting diversity onscreen” — recently optioned the German series “Dr. Illegal,” and aired “Marie Claire Young Women’s Honors” on The CW in December.
