Penélope Cruz has plenty of buzz heading into Oscar season thanks to her leading role in Pedro Almodovar’s latest, “Parallel Mothers.” Cate Blanchett just signed on to the Spanish filmmaker’s first English-language feature, “A Manual for Cleaning Women.” Now Gina Rodriguez has been tapped to topline a potential TV adaptation of his 1988 dark comedy “Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown.” The “Jane the Virgin” alumna is also set to exec produce the project, which is in development at Apple TV+. The Hollywood Reporter broke the news.
Said to feature English and Spanish, the series will see Rodriguez playing Pepa, who was played by Carmen Maura in the Oscar-nominated film the series is based on. The original story followed Pepa’s journey to investigate why her lover left her.
Almodovar is among the project’s exec producers. Noelle Valdivia (“Masters of Sex”) is attached to write the script and serve as showrunner if the series moves forward.
Best known for her titular, award-winning role in “Jane the Virgin,” Rodriguez’s other credits include “Annihilation,” “Someone Great,” and “Diary of a Future President.” Back in 2021 word got out that she’s making her directorial debut with a pic inspired by Mexican American boxing champion Ryan Garcia.
