Next Monday night, HBO will end its great summer documentary series with Gloria Steinem: In Her Own Words. It’s a film that really lets Gloria’s words throughout her life as a public figure to speak for themselves. When you see those clips from the 70s and hear what she was saying you realize, if you didn’t already know it, that she is a revolutionary.
It’s a great history lesson on the hard fought wins of the women’s movement. I know that I would not be where I am today had these women (and Gloria would be the first to say that there were many, many women involved) not put themselves on the line for my rights and choices. But there is still so much work to do.
Women’s rights are being rolled back across this country and the globe so don’t fool yourselves and don’t buy the crap that is being sold by right-wing folks that feminism is done and is the cause of the decline of cilivization. That just makes me laugh and cry at the same time because so many people believe it.
Gloria poses the question at the end of the documentary (which is 60 minutes) long and ask us what we think feminism will look like in 40 years. The folks at the Women’s Media Center which Gloria founded about six years ago have taken up the challenge and have put together a campaign, In Your Own Words asking you, dear reader, what you think is the future of feminism. (Full disclosure — I was hired by the Women’s Media Center to help with this campaign and to do outreach on the film.)
Here’s the campaign:
1- Host a house party to coincide with the film’s premiere next Monday, August 15 t 9pm EST/PST. Might I suggest to invite a young woman if you are older, or invite an older woman if you are younger to have a great inter-generational conversation. Sign up here to register your house party.
2- Write on the Women’s Media Center Facebook page in 140 characters what you think the future of feminism looks like.
3- Tweet the premiere — use the tags #gloria or #WMC to follow the conversation
4- Participate in a live chat on HBO Connect with Gloria on August 16th at 4pm EST.
5- Join the video contest. Submit a two minute video to You Tube talking about what you see is the future of feminism. Contest will launch on August 15 at 10pm EST following the documentary. Details and rules will be posted here.
