Golden Globe Nominations: Women Directors Are Shut Out Yet Again

"Little Women"

The 2020 Golden Globe nominations are in. Since 2010, 50 filmmakers have been nominated for Best Director at the ceremony. Just two of them have been women: Kathryn Bigelow (“Zero Dark Thirty,” 2012) and Ava DuVernay (“Selma,” 2014). That’s right, this year’s Best Director race is — yet again — comprised entirely of men. All of the titles competing for Best Motion Picture – Drama and Best Motion Picture – Musical of Comedy are helmed by men.

Women-directed offerings such as Greta Gerwig’s “Little Women,” Alma Har’el’s “Honey Boy,” Marielle Heller’s “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood,” Lorene Scafaria’s “Hustlers,” Melina Matsoukas’ “Queen & Slim,” and Olivia Wilde’s “Booksmart” have been earning raves — and awards attention — since their first screenings, but the pics didn’t seem to make as much of an impression on the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA).

Another awards frontrunner, Lulu Wang’s “The Farewell,” did land a nod for Best Motion Picture – Foreign Language, as did Céline Sciamma’s “Portrait of a Lady on Fire.” Awkwafina is up for Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy for the former. That category also includes “Booksmart’s” Beanie Feldstein. The Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama race features Cynthia Erivo and Saoirse Ronan for “Harriet” and “Little Women,” respectively. “Hustlers'” Jennifer Lopez and “Marriage Story’s” Laura Dern are among those who scored nods for Best Supporting Actress.

The fact that all 20 of the actresses up for TV honors are white women suggests that the ceremony is still lagging behind when it comes to inclusivity. Nominees in the drama category include “The Morning Show” co-stars Reese Witherspoon and Jennifer Aniston. “Fleabag’s” Phoebe Waller Bridge and “Russian Doll’s” Natasha Lyonne are among the contenders in the comedy category.

Ava DuVernay’s hit Netflix limited series “When They See Us” failed to land a single nod — one of the year’s most disappointing snubs.

The Golden Globes will take place January 5. Head over to Vanity Fair to check out all of the nominees.
