“Good Girls Revolt’s” Dana Calvo Will Serve as Co-Showrunner on “Dune: The Sisterhood”

Dana Calvo is switching gears from period drama to sci-fi. The “Good Girls Revolt” creator has signed a multi-year overall deal with Legendary Television Studios that sees her serving as co-showrunner on Legendary’s “Dune: The Sisterhood” for HBO Max. Deadline confirmed the news.

Based on the Frank Herbert’s beloved 1965 novel “Dune,” “Dune: The Sisterhood” received a straight-to-series order from WarnerMedia’s upcoming streaming service. The project is “designed to co-exist with the ‘Dune’ feature film, which is in production at Warner Bros, as part of Legendary’s comprehensive plans for ‘Dune’ that also include video games, digital content packages, and comic book series,” the source details.

While “Dune” “portrays a future in which humanity has spread across the galaxy to thousands of worlds all ruled by the Padishah Emperor, The Imperium,” “Dune: The Sisterhood” will explore “this universe through the eyes of a mysterious order of women: the Bene Gesserit,” Deadline writes. “Given extraordinary abilities by their mastery of the body and the mind, the Bene Gesserit expertly weave through the feudal politics and intrigue of The Imperium, pursuing plans of their own that will ultimately lead them to the enigmatic planet Arrakis — known to its inhabitants as Dune.”

“Good Girls Revolt” saw Calvo depicting women coming up against sexism in 1960s newsroom. The Amazon Studios drama was cancelled after one season — seemingly due in large part to a sexist exec.

While Amazon doesn’t release ratings data, “sources say streaming monitor Symphony Advanced Media metrics had ‘Good Girls Revolt’ collecting more viewers than many of Amazon’s other originals,” The Hollywood Reporter wrote when the show was originally cancelled. It was also one of the streamer’s biggest hits ever among female viewers. Sources revealed that “Amazon Studios head Roy Price was not a fan of the series and didn’t deem it to be an awards season player in opting to pass on ordering a second season after hearing Sony’s Season 2 pitch.” Calvo also spoke about Price’s unenthusiastic response to the series. Price later resigned from his job after being accused of sexual harassment in the workplace.

Calvo’s other credits include “Narcos,” “Made in Jersey,” and “Covert Affairs.”
