Gotham Award nominations are in. Charlotte Wells’ feature debut, “Aftersun,” a look inside a father and daughter’s seaside vacation, is up for Best Feature. It’s the sole woman-directed film competing for the night’s top honor.
Five titles are in the running for Best Documentary Feature and two of them are helmed by women: Lauras Poitras’ “All the Beauty and the Bloodshed,” a portrait of artist Nan Goldin and her mission to hold the Sackler family accountable for the opioid crisis, and Iliana Sosa’s “What We Leave Behind,” a tribute to the director’s grandfather that chronicles his efforts to build a house in rural Mexico.
Three of six films nominated for Best International Feature are directed by women. Marie Kreutzer’s “Corsage,” an unconventional biopic of Empress Elisabeth of Austria, is joined by “Happening.” Audrey Diwan’s drama about a woman trying to find an abortion, and “Saint Omer,” Alice Diop’s modern-day take on the Medea myth.
Women also account for three of six nominees for the Bingham Ray Breakthrough Director Award. Wells landed a nod, as did Antoneta Alamat Kusijanovic and Beth de Araújo. Kusijanovic is being recognized for “Murina,” a coming-of-age story about a teenage girl who is drawn to her father’s wealthy friend, and de Araújo for “Soft & Quiet,” a thriller that follows an elementary school teacher. Non-binary filmmaker Jane Schoenbrun is also in the running for the honor for “We’re All Going to the World’s Fair,” a story of a teenager who becomes obsessed with an online role-playing game.
Two of three nominees in the Best Screenplay category are women: Lena Dunham and Sarah Polley. The former is being honored for “Catherine Called Birdy,” a comedy about a 13th-century teenage girl trying to avoid marriage, and the latter for “Women Talking,” a look inside a secluded religious community dealing with the aftermath of sexual assaults.
Acting nominees include “Till’s” Danielle Deadwyler (Outstanding Lead Performance) and “The Whale’s” Hong Chau (Outstanding Supporting Performance).
