Gotham Awards Nominations: “The Farewell,” “Hustlers,” & More

"The Farewell"

Nominations for the 29th Gotham Awards have been announced, and if they’re any indication of what’s to come this awards season, Lulu Wang’s “The Farewell” is off to a flying start. The Sundance breakout tied for the most noms with three. Based on an actual lie, the Awkwafina-starrer centers on a family who decides to lie to their grandmother about her terminal diagnosis. Wang wrote the script, and is the only woman in the running for Best Screenplay at the ceremony.

“The Farewell” is one of two women-directed pics up for Best Feature, which is comprised of five nominees. Lorene Scafaria’s “Hustlers” is also up for the honors. Penned by Scafaria and inspired by a true story, the critical and commercial hit centers on strippers who decide to take advantage of their customers: Wall Street bros.

Awkwafina is in the Best Actress race. Other nominees include Alfre Woodard for “Clemency,” Chinonye Chukwu’s drama about a morally conflicted prison warden, and Elisabeth Moss for “Her Smell,” a portrait of a punk singer battling addiction.

Five filmmakers are up for the Bingham Ray Breakthrough Director Award, and two are women: Olivia Wilde and Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre. The former is being recognized for “Booksmart,” a comedy about overachieving best friends who vow to make up for all the fun they’ve missed out on by concentrating on their studies, and the latter for “The Mustang,” the story of a convict who participates in a rehabilitation therapy program training wild mustangs.

Of five films in the running for Best Documentary, three are directed or co-directed by women: Julia Reicherdt and Steven Bognar’s “American Factory,” Nanfu Wang and Jialing Zhang’s “One Child Nation,” and Petra Costa’s “The Edge of Democracy.” The former two picked up awards at Sundance. “American Factory” follows the aftermath of a Chinese billionaire buying a former GM plant in Ohio, and “One Child Nation” explores the legacy of China’s controversial one-child policy. “The Edge of Democracy” sees Costa reflecting on the past, present, and future of politics in Brazil.

The IFP Gotham Awards will take place December 2 in New York. Head over to Deadline to see all of the nominees. Women-created series up for honors include Susannah Grant’s “Unbelievable,” Ava DuVernay’s “When They See Us,” and Natasha Lyonne, Leslye Headland, and Amy Poehler’s “Russian Doll.”
