“Nomadland” continues to dominate awards season. Chloé Zhao’s drama about a woman who moves into her camping van and travels across the American West in the aftermath of the Great Recession won Best Feature at yesterday’s Gotham Awards. The Frances McDormand-starrer also took home the Gotham Audience Award at the virtual event.
All five titles in the running for Best Feature were helmed by women: Kitty Green’s “The Assistant,” Kelly Reichardt’s “First Cow,” Eliza Hittman’s “Never Rarely Sometimes Always,” and Natalie Erika James’ “Relic” were nominated alongside “Nomadland,” which was recently named Best Picture by The National Society of Film Critics.
Two women-directed titles tied for Best Documentary: “A Thousand Cuts” and “Time.” The former, directed by Ramona S. Diaz, spotlights journalist Maria Ressa and examines the crackdown on the news media in the Philippines by President Rodrigo Duterte, and the latter, directed by Garrett Bradley, is a portrait of a modern-day abolitionist’s decades-long fight to secure her husband’s release from prison.
“Identifying Features” was honored with the Best International Feature Award. Directed and co-written by Fernanda Valadez, the drama follows a woman who embarks on a journey to find her missing son, a Mexican migrant who goes missing on his way to the U.S. border.
Other winners from the 30th annual edition of the ceremony included Nicole Beharie, who snagged the Best Actress award for Channing Godfrey Peoples’ mother-daughter drama “Miss Juneteenth,” and “I May Destroy You,” Michaela Coel’s semi-autobiographical sexual assault drama which scored the Breakthrough Series – Short Format award.
