Production company Groenlandia has announced a new editorial department specifically dedicated to films from women directors. Created with “the goal of putting female directors at the center of the film industry,” the org’s new arm — known as Lynn — will develop and produce projects from rising and seasoned women filmmakers, according to a press release.
Named after an island off the coast of Greenland, Lynn is described as a space where women-directed cinema can “flourish and grow.” Its projects will “vary in terms of language, style, and form…with no preclusions in terms of genre and tone.”
The first titles to hail from Lynn are shorts “Nato Raro” and “Capitan Didier,” both produced with Rai Cinema. From Maria Sole Tognazzi, the former follows the everyday routine of a child and the adults around him. The latter, directed by Margherita Ferri, is the story of a boy who dreams of building his own boat from pizza boxes.
Production kicked off in December on Lynn’s first two features. Francesca Marino’s “Blackout Love” stars Anna Foglietta and is produced with the support of Amazon Studios. “Settembre,” from Giulia Steigerwalt and Rai Cinema, stars Barbara Ronchi, Fabrizio Bentivoglio, and Thony. An animated series from Marta Bencich, “YU,” is in development as well.
“Whether it be action, drama, or comedy, Groenlandia has always strived to create cinema inspired by freedom, inclusivity, and linguistic experimentation. We understand that offering a different gaze will enrich the cinematic perspective and that’s why we believe a concrete and specific commitment is needed, with our entire structure supporting the directors and their points of view,” company co-founder Matteo Rovere said. “The fact that partners such as Rai Cinema and Amazon Studios immediately backed [Lynn] with great passion helps us on our path.”
