Gugu Mbatha- Raw (“Belle,” “Beyond the Lights”) is set to star in the thriller “Fast Color,” Variety reports. “Miss Stevens” director Julia Hart is set to helm, with a screenplay she co-wrote with “La La Land” producer Jordan Horowitz.
Mbatha-Raw will portray “a woman forced to go on the run when her superhuman abilities are discovered. Years after having abandoned her family, the only place she has left to hide is home.”
LD Entertainment is also on board to produce, with LD’s Mickey Lidell giving more insight into the content of the film: “This is exactly the kind of movie I want to see in the theater — three generations of strong women finding their power,” Liddell said. “Gugu and Julia are extraordinary talents and I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to work with them both on this special project.”
Three generations of strong women sounds like a good set of characters to us. Mbatha-Raw most recently appeared in the much-beloved “San Junipero” episode of Netflix’s “Black Mirror.” She co-stars with Jessica Chastain in “Miss Sloane.” She’ll next be seen in Disney’s live-action “Beauty and the Beast,” and is currently shooting Ava DuVernay’s “A Wrinkle in Time.”
Hart’s “Miss Stevens” premiered at last year’s SXSW Festival. Her debut script, “The Keeping Room,” was made into a feature starring Brit Marling and Hailee Steinfeld. It definitely sounds like this next project follows her desire to tell female-centric stories — a piece of advice she gave to other female directors when she spoke with Women and Hollywood. “Tell female stories,” she said. “I don’t know, maybe I’m not supposed to say that, but if we don’t, who will? Some of my favorite female characters were written by men. I’m not saying men can’t [write women]. I’m just saying, they’ve got men covered. They’ve got them covered in spades. So let’s tell a few stories about women while we’re here.”
