Gugu Mbatha-Raw just played a woman with superpowers in Julia Hart’s “Fast Color” and now she’ll portray a real-life hero. The “Wrinkle in Time” actress is set to topline Racing Green Pictures’ “Seacole.” The biopic tells the story of Mary Seacole, a Jamaican nurse who cared for wounded British soldiers during the Crimean War.
“Seacole’s self-sacrifice on the front lines and fierce, adversarial relationship with Florence Nightingale during the war made her famous in her time,” a press release announcing the project details.
Dianne Houston (“Take the Lead”), Marnie Dickens (“Ripper Street”), and Charlie Stratton (“In Secret”) penned the script. The latter is is directing.
Slated to shoot over the next two months in Malta, Romania, and London, “Seacole” is expected to hit the festival circuit in 2020.
“Mary Seacole was an extraordinary woman, and I’m proud to bring her story to today’s audiences with the hope that they will be inspired by her kindness and tenacity,” said Billy Peterson, head of Racing Green Pictures.
Mbatha-Raw has a number of women-directed features on the way, including Brenda Chapman’s “Come Away,” a prequel to the stories of “Peter Pan” and “Alice in Wonderland,” Philippa Lowthorpe’s “Misbehaviour,” which is inspired by the real life story of a group of women who disrupted the 1970 Miss World beauty competition in London, and Jessica Swale’s “Summerland,” a drama set during WWII. The in-demand actress will also appear alongside Reese Witherspoon and Jennifer Aniston in “The Morning Show,” an upcoming Apple series set in the world of daytime TV. Mimi Leder and Lynn Shelton are directing eps of the highly anticipated series.
“I’m for inclusivity, and I’m for representation, and I’m for films celebrating women,” Mbatha-Raw has said. She emphasized that she’s “more interested in work that maybe makes people think, Why haven’t we seen this before? Who’s not in the room? Who’s not represented?”
