Haley Lu Richardson and Barbie Ferreira are hitting the road in pursuit of safe and legal abortion. The pair are signed on to topline road trip movie “UNpregnant” for HBO Max, the premium cable network’s upcoming streaming service. The Hollywood Reporter broke the news.
Written by Jenni Hendriks and Ted Caplan and based on their book of the same name, the timely coming-of-age pic tells the story of a Missouri teen who “hits the highway with a friend to obtain a legal abortion,” according to the source.
Rachel Lee Goldenberg, who is behind the upcoming musical adaptation of “Valley Girl,” is directing. Her TV credits include “I’m Sorry” and “Divorce.”
“We want to create authentic, relevant films that are told with grace and humor to serve our young adult audience, and this is exactly that,” said Sarah Aubrey, head of original content, HBO Max.
Richardson was last seen in “Five Feet Apart,” a tearjerker about teens with cystic fibrosis who fall in love. “Support the Girls,” “The Edge of Seventeen,” and “Split” are among her other credits.
Ferreira costars in”Euphoria,” an edgy HBO teen drama led by Zendaya. The series has been renewed for a second season with a premiere date TBA.
“UNpregnant” is slated to shoot this fall in New Mexico.
Other HBO Max projects in the works include Lupita Nyong’o and Danai Gurira’s adaptation of Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s acclaimed novel “Americanah” and a Julia Child drama starring Joan Cusack.
