If you love Hannah Gadsby’s work but haven’t been able to catch her on tour, we have some good news for you. The “Nanette” comedian’s last stand-up set, “Douglas,” has been acquired by Netflix. Gadsby revealed the special will be available on the streamer next year, per The Hollywood Reporter.
“I’m so excited to announce today that ‘Douglas’ will be released on Netflix in 2020,” she announced yesterday at a Netflix Emmy For Your Consideration event. “I’m really enjoying touring with the live performance, but there will be places in the world that I won’t be able to visit, so it’s wonderful that Netflix will bring the show to every corner of the globe.”
Gadsby is currently on tour with “Douglas,” which is named after her dog. The stand-up show, Gadsby’s 11th, sees the comic reckoning with her post-“Nanette” success and sharing what she’s learned since creating the legendary special. She first performed “Douglas” in Melbourne in March and is now touring the show in the U.S. Dates for Europe, Australia, Canada, and New Zealand performances are forthcoming.
“Nanette” dropped on Netflix last summer. A powerful set examining rape culture, internalized homophobia and misogyny, and the very nature of comedy itself, the special recently won a Peabody. It also received Just for Laughs’ 2018 Comedy Special of the Year prize.
Gadsby has written for projects such as “Please Like Me” and “Adam Hills in Gordon St Tonight.” She acted in the former, as well as “Underbelly” and “The Librarians.” Her memoir, “Ten Steps to Nanette,” is due later this year.
