“South Mountain” has found a home. Broadway World reports that Breaking Glass Pictures secured U.S. rights to Hiliary Brougher’s award-winning drama.
Set in the Catskills, “South Mountain” tells the story of Lila (Talia Balsam), an artist and mother who has organized her life around her loved ones, “often at the expense of her own happiness. When her husband (Scott Cohen) leaves her for another woman with whom he has already fathered a child, Lila plunges into an existential crisis that unfolds with simmering tension and a series of unexpected twists,” the source hints. Brougher penned the script.
Currently boasting a 100 percent “Fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the drama premiered in competition at the 2019 edition of SXSW. “South Mountain” went on to win the Grand Jury Award for Narrative Feature at New Hampshire Film Festival and a Jury Prize for Excellence in Directing from the Naples International Film Festival.
“I made this film with a small team of remarkable collaborators, including my husband, cinematographer Ethan Mass, and an incredible cast led by Talia Balsam and Scott Cohen,” said Brougher. “‘South Mountain’ is about the rebirth of a shattered family. In making it, I’ve rediscovered my own creative voice and sense of cinematic purpose. It’s an honor to get to share such a personal, and personally-made film with audiences.”
Richard Ross, Co-President of Breaking Glass, added, “Beautifully confident and eloquently personal, Brougher’s film is both serenely quiet, yet filled with emotion and rage. Balsam gives a pitch perfect performance as a woman who tries to ‘hold on’ while watching her world begin to crumble.”
Brougher described “South Mountain” as an “inverse love story” in an interview with us. “Love is only sometimes about acquiring. It’s as often about letting go. That part can be beautiful, too — and reveal recognition and truth,” she explained.
“The Sticky Fingers of Time” and “Stephanie Daley” are among Brougher’s other credits.
No word on a release date for “South Mountain” just yet.
