Since Wendy Davis’ epic 13 hour filibuster last week, female celebrities like Lena Dunham and others tweeted their support for the Texas Senator. Yesterday, a rally was held that coincided with the beginning of another special session trying to get SB5 (the bill that Davis filibustered) passed which Gov. Rick Perry claims will happen.
Standing alongside Davis, Planned Parenthood president Cecile Richards and NARAL president Ilyse Hogue were Dixie Chicks singer Natalie Maines, House actress Lisa Edelstein and Law & Order: SVU’s Stephanie March. Thousands of supporters were present at the march.
Connie Britton has also spoke out in support of Davis as well. After last week’s filibuster, the internet nearly exploded in its linking of Davis to the television cult hit Friday Night Lights and specifically Britton’s character–Tami Taylor, a woman who was known for speaking her mind and standing up for what she believes in. Suggestions that Britton should play Davis in a Wendy Davis biopic also went viral.
Britton has now partnered with Planned Parenthood of Texas to release a shirt with the slogan “What Would Tami Taylor Do?” with all proceeds going to Planned Parenthood. The shirt is available for the month of July only.
Britton released a statement about Davis and her support of the women of Texas.
The character Tami on Friday Night Lights is a Texas woman deeply committed to her community and to standing up for what is right for her
neighbors and the people she loves. I have been inspired by how people around the country have united to stand with the women of Texas, and I can’t help
but think that, in this moment, we all have the opportunity to join with and become strong, powerful Texas men and women.
As of now, the fate of SB5 is uncertain–it was unclear if a vote on the bill would be made today or held until next week.
