Awards season is heating up. Gotham Award and Critics Choice nominations dropped last week, more and more countries are submitting their picks in the International Oscar Feature race, and the International Documentary Association (IDA) just announced shortlists for the Best Feature and Best Short categories at the IDA Documentary Awards.
Up to 10 nominees in each of the feature and short documentary categories will be selected from the shortlists.
Titles in the features shortlist include “Ascension,” Jessica Kingdon’s exploration of China’s industrial supply chain, and “Fruits of Labor,” Emily Cohen’s portrait of a Mexican-American teen struggling to balance the demands of school, work, and home. Also in the running is “Writing with Fire,” Rintu Thomas and Sushmit Ghosh’s look inside India’s only women-led news outlet.
“The feature documentary shortlist was selected from 314 films from 58 countries. 52% of directors and 55% of producers are women, 59% of directors and 41% of producers identify as BIPOC. 14% of directors and 17% of producers are LGBTQ,” a press release announcing the shortlists details.
Luisa Conlon’s “Senior Prom” and Hannah Olson’s “The Last Cruise” are among the contenders on the doc shortlist. The former centers on an LGBTQ+ retirement home’s prom, and the latter revisits the early days of COVID-19 and the Diamond Princess Cruise Ship’s ill-fated journey from Yokohama, Japan.
“The short documentary shortlist was selected from 137 films from 33 countries. 59% of directors and 59% of producers are women, 65% of directors and 53% of producers identify as BIPOC. 12% of directors and 12% of producers are LGBTQ. 0% of directors and 0% of producers are disabled,” according to the IDA.
