IFC Films Picks Up Kelly Reichardt’s ‘Certain Women,’ Starring Michelle Williams

IFC Films has acquired the U.S. rights to Kelly Reichardt’s “Certain Women.” The star-studded drama premiered in January at Sundance to strong notices.

Stage 6 Films scooped up the international rights for the film, based on Maile Meloy’s collection of short stories “Both Ways Is the Only Way I Want It,” before production kicked off. The Sony-created company will handle international distribution.

The film tells the story of intersecting lives across Montana. “Certain Women” sees Reichardt reuniting with longtime collaborator Michelle Williams. The pair previously worked together on 2008’s “Wendy and Lucy” and 2010’s “Meek’s Cutoff.” This time around, Williams plays a new home owner in the throes of relationship problems with her husband (James Le Gros). The Oscar-nominated actress is joined by Kristen Stewart, portraying an out-of-towner who strikes up a bond with a ranch hand (Lily Gladstone), and Laura Dern as a lawyer tasked with handling a hostage situation spurred by her client.

“The entire team at IFC Films have long been fans of Kelly and are thrilled to finally be working with her — she is a master at her craft and one of the most distinct storytellers working in cinema today,” Jonathan Sehring, president of Sundance Selects/IFC Films, said in a statement. “Along with her amazing cast of Kristen Stewart, Laura Dern, Lily Gladstone and Michelle Williams, Kelly has created another treasure that confirms her as one of our great American filmmakers. We can’t wait to bring it to the theaters for audiences to see.”

Reichardt added, “We’re thrilled to be working with IFC Films. Their enthusiasm for the film was amazing, and we very much look forward to collaborating with their team on its release this year.”

Reichardt’s most recent credit is 2013’s “Night Moves,” a drama centered on radical environmentalists, starring Dakota Fanning and Jesse Eisenberg.
