Iman Vellani will lead “Ms. Marvel.” Variety confirmed the news. Vellani’s portrayal of the Pakistani American caped crusader marks the Canadian actress’ on-screen debut. Her first role will be historic.
Based on the comic book character of the same name, the upcoming Disney+ series tells the story of Marvel Studios’ first on-screen Muslim hero. It follows Kamala Khan, AKA Ms. Marvel, a 16-year-old living in New Jersey who idolizes superheroes like Captain Marvel.
“With an Inhuman ability to alter shape and size, the newest Ms. Marvel employs an idealistic attitude as much as any power to make the world a better place,” Marvel notes. The character has already made the Marvel universe a better, and more inclusive place on the page, and we’re looking forward to Velanni’s depiction adding some much needed diversity to the superhero genre on-screen.
Bisha K. Ali (“Four Weddings and a Funeral”) is penning “Ms. Marvel.” Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy (“A Girl in the River: The Price of Forgiveness”) and Meera Menon (“Equity”) are among its directors.
