Stella Meghie and Issa Rae are reuniting. Just a month after premiering her latest pic, “The Weekend,” at the Toronto International Film Festival, Meghie has lined up another feature. The comedy sees her joining forces with Rae, whom she directed in an episode of “Insecure.” Rae toplines and co-created the HBO comedy, which just concluded its third season.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Rae will star in Meghie’s “American Princess.” Set up at Fox, the project centers on an American woman (Rae) who moves to London. “She’s drawn into a world of wealth and high society and falls in love in a very unexpected way,” the source hints. “Insecure” writer and co-exec producer Amy Aniobi penned the script.
“A Simple Favor” director Paul Feig is among “American Princess'” producers.
Best known for her 2017 adaptation of YA novel “Everything, Everything” starring Amandla Stenberg, Meghie received an 2017 Indie Spirit Award for best first screenplay for “Jean of the Joneses,” which also marked her feature directorial debut. She’s currently developing “The Photograph” for Universal. Meghie will write and direct the family drama.
When we asked Meghie what she considers the biggest misconception about her or her work, she said, “That I’m not telling a universal story.”
Rae has received an Emmy nod and two Golden Globe nominations for her acting on “Insecure.” She can currently be seen on the big screen in Black Lives Matter-inspired drama “The Hate U Give.”
