“Jagged Little Pill” is going to have a whole new life on Broadway. The American Repertory Theater musical, based on Alanis Morissette’s 1995 album of the same name, will be opening on Broadway this fall, the Associated Press reports. The show originally ran at the A.R.T. at Harvard University from May 5-July 15, 2018.
Oscar-winning “Juno” screenwriter Diablo Cody penned the book. Inspired by — and with the use of — the songs of “Jagged Little Pill,” the production centers on the Healys, a suburban family whose lives are thrown into disarray by a string of disturbing events. “They must choose between maintaining the status quo or facing harsh truths about themselves, their community, and the world around them,” the show’s synopsis details.
Morissette wrote the show’s lyrics and co-wrote the music with Glen Ballard. Diane Paulus directed the A.R.T. version, but no word on whether she’ll accompany “Jagged Little Pill” to Broadway.
The album “Jagged Little Pill” has sold over 33 million copies worldwide. Featuring songs like “You Oughta Know,” “All I Really Want,” and “Ironic,” it nabbed nine Grammy nods and won for Album of the Year and Best Rock Album. Since then, Morissette has released five other albums. Also an actress, she has appeared on-screen in projects such as “Dogma,” “Sex and the City,” and “Weeds,” and in theater productions of Eve Ensler’s “The Vaginia Monologues” and “The Exonerated.”
Paulus most recently directed Ensler’s “In the Body of the World.” “Waitress,” “Finding Neverland,” “Pippin,” and “Porgy and Bess,” are among her other credits. She also serves as the Terrie and Bradley Bloom Artistic Director of the A.R.T.
Cody’s big screen writing credits include “Tully,” “Ricki and the Flash,” and “Young Adult.” She co-created Showtime’s Toni Collette-led dissociative identity disorder dramedy “United States of Tara” and Tig Notaro’s semi-autobiographical Amazon comedy “One Mississippi.” She’s currently working on a reboot of classic sitcom “Alice.”
