Jane Campion’s “The Power of the Dog” Acquired by Netflix

Campion: Film Society of Lincoln Center/YouTube

Netflix has snagged most worldwide rights to Jane Campion’s latest, “The Power of the Dog.” The streamer is planning a 2021 theatrical and streaming premiere for the adaptation of Thomas Savage’s 1967 novel. Deadline confirmed the news.

Penned by Campion, the Montana-set Western sees wealthy brothers going to war with one another when one of them secretly marries a local widow played by Elisabeth Moss.

Campion and Moss previously collaborated on BBC Two/Sundance Channel crime series “Top of the Lake.”

Campion won an Oscar for her screenplay for “The Piano,” and received a nod for directing the film. She became the first — and remains the only — female director to take home Cannes Film Festival’s Palme d’Or for the Holly Hunter-starrer. “Bright Star,” “Holy Smoke,” and “Sweetie” are among her other features.

Moss reprises her Emmy-winning role as Offred in Hulu’s third season of feminist dystopia “The Handmaid’s Tale,” set to premiere June 5. A trailer just dropped for her next pic, Andrea Berloff mob drama “The Kitchen.” Co-starring Melissa McCarthy and Tiffany Haddish, the comic adaptation hits theaters August 9. The “Mad Men” alumna’s recent credits include punk saga “Her Smell” and Jordan Peele horror hit “Us.”

Netflix’s deal for “The Power of the Dog” excludes UK free TV rights, “which are retained by BBC Films, which helped develop the project and is backing production,” the source explains.
