Jane Fonda to Be Honored with PGA’s Stanley Kramer Award

Fonda in "Jane Fonda in Five Acts"

Best known for her on-screen work in film and television titles such as “Grace and Frankie” and “9 to 5,” Jane Fonda is also well recognized for her commitment to causes off-screen. The Oscar-winning actress and famed activist and philanthropist is set to receive the Producers Guild of America’s 2019 Stanley Kramer Award for her contributions in the latter category, Deadline reports. Given in honor of a “production, producer, or other individuals whose achievement or contribution illuminates and raises public awareness of important social issues,” the award’s previous recipients include social thriller “Get Out,” AIDs drama “The Normal Heart,” and “The Hunting Ground,” a doc exploring the epidemic of sexual assaults on college campuses across the U.S.

An international icon, Fonda is arguably one of most famous faces of the feminist movement and has been outspoken about women’s rights for decades. She’s raised nearly $1 million for the Women’s Media Center, which she co-founded with Gloria Steinem and Robin Morgan to increase the visibility of women and girls in media. Her nonprofit, the Georgia Campaign for Adolescent Power & Potential, has raised “$1.3 million to lower the teen pregnancy rate and improve the overall health and well-being of young people in the state of Georgia,” the source writes.

“Jane Fonda has built an extraordinary legacy as an outspoken advocate for the vulnerable in our society,” said PGA presidents Gail Berman and Lucy Fisher. “Throughout her remarkable life, she has made and continues to make a significant impact on the lives of people through her work both on and off the screen. Fonda exemplifies the spirit of [progressive filmmaker] Stanley Kramer, and we are proud to honor her.”

Fonda is the subject of “Jane Fonda in Five Acts,” a documentary exploring the fitness tycoon’s career in the entertainment industry and her activism outside of it. The HBO film made its world premiere at Sundance in January.

A two-time Oscar winner, Fonda took home trophies for “Klute” and “Coming Home.” She’s also received nods for “The Morning After,” “On Golden Pond,” “The China Syndrome,” “Julia,” and “They Shoot Horses, Don’t They?” She currently stars on Netflix’s “Grace and Frankie” alongside Lily Tomlin. The sitcom’s fifth season is set to drop January 18. Fonda was last seen on the big screen in this year’s ensemble comedy “Book Club,” the story of four lifelong friends whose lives are changed after reading “50 Shades of Grey.”

Fonda will receive the Stanley Kramer Award January 19 during the 30th annual PGA Awards.
