Jennifer Fox’s narrative debut earned nods from the Emmy Awards, Indie Spirits Awards, and Gotham Awards, among others. Now she’s following up “The Tale” with another feature based on a true story. She’ll write and direct an adaptation of “The Other Dr. Gilmer,” a press release announced.
Based on the soon to be published book from Dr. Benjamin Gilmer, “The Other Dr. Gilmer” is “the story of a beloved small town physician, Dr. Vince Gilmer, who murders his father for mysterious reasons. Dr. Vince Gilmer’s successor, coincidentally named Dr. Benjamin Gilmer, becomes obsessed with understanding what drove Vince to snap. A true crime investigation coupled with a medical mystery, and a social justice crusade, ultimately changes the course of both their lives,” the project’s synopsis details.
Concordia Studio acquired rights to develop and produce the feature along with Social Construct Films and Maven Screen Media.
“I am always looking for a great story that combines high drama and compelling characters, while illuminating the human plight,” said Fox. “I was immediately drawn to Benjamin’s wholehearted determination to save Vince, a complete stranger, and to their story, which exposes the flaws in our justice system particularly for those without money and resources. This film will take us on a harrowing journey that questions the boundaries of the self, the fallibility of the human brain, and the compassion we should have for each other.”
Described by Fox as a “film memoir,” “The Tale” centers on a documentary filmmaker and professor who is forced to reexamine her past “relationship” with her coach. “It’s based on what happened to me at 13, and how I processed it as ‘love’ up until I was in my 40s,” Fox told us. The story is told from Fox’s perspective as an adult (Laura Dern) and as a child (Isabelle Nelisse). The critically acclaimed sexual abuse drama aired on HBO.
Fox’s doc credits include “Beirut: The Last Home Movie,” “An American Love Story,” and “Flying: Confessions of a Free Woman.”
