Jenny Bicks explored NYC with “Sex and the City” and the suburbs with “Divorce” — and now she’s heading to small town America. The writer-producer’s adaptation of BBC Three’s “This Country” has received a pilot order at Fox, Variety confirms. She’s writing the project and “Bridesmaids” director Paul Feig will helm the pilot.
The half-hour comedy sees a documentary crew chronicling the lives of young people in a small town. The focus will be on cousins Kelly and Shrub Mallet “and their idiosyncratic surroundings.”
Bicks and Feig will executive produce via Perkins Street Productions and Feigco Entertainment, respectively. Joining them are BBC Studios’ Angie Stephenson and the original series’ creators and stars, Daisy May Cooper and Charlie Cooper. The project hails from Lionsgate Television, where Bicks is under an overall deal, BBC Studios, and Fox Entertainment.
The original “This Country” debuted in 2017 and has aired two seasons. It won BAFTA Awards for Best Scripted Comedy and Best Female Performance in a Comedy (Daisy May Cooper).
“The Greatest Showman,” “Rio 2,” and “The Big C” are among Bicks’ other credits. She received an Emmy and two PGA Awards for producing “Sex and the City.”
An advocate for gender equality in show business, Feig is known for writing, directing and producing projects about women. His filmography includes women-centric titles such as “Last Christmas,” “A Simple Favor,” “Ghostbusters,” “Spy,” and “The Heat.” He’s producing Stella Meghie’s London-set comedy “American Princess” and Eva Longoria’s feature directorial debut, workplace comedy “24-7.”
