Best known for her comedy work on-screen in “SNL” and “Parks and Rec” and behind the scenes as an exec producer on “Broad City” and “Russian Doll,” Amy Poehler is switching gears. The multi-hyphenate is on board to exec produce an adaptation of Sally Hepsworth’s “The Mother-In-Law,” a thriller that’s earned comparisons to “Gone Girl” and “Big Little Lies.” NBC gave a put pilot commitment to the project, which hails from “The Path” creator Jessica Goldberg, Poehler “and her Paper Kite production company, 3 Arts Entertainment, and Universal TV, where Goldberg and Paper Kite are under deals,” Deadline reports.
“The Mother-In-Law” centers around “a woman’s complicated relationship with her husband’s family that ends in death.” Described as “a gripping mystery that explores motherhood, class, race, and how dangerous family secrets can be,” the project is penned by Goldberg, who counts “Parenthood” among her previous credits.
“The Mother-In-Law” was published in January.
Paper Kite’s slate includes Natasha Lyonne-starrer “Russian Doll,” which will return for a second season on Netflix, and an upcoming untitled comedy series at Amazon. The latter is created, written, and exec produced by “Girls Trip” scribe Tracy Oliver, and follows the lives of four black women whose friendship dates back to their college days at NYU.
