Broadway star Jessie Mueller has been confirmed to play the title role in Sara Bareilles’ upcoming musical “Waitress.”
Mueller won a Best Actress Tony last year for her performance in the Carole King musical “Beautiful.” “Waitress” is based on the 2007 indie film of the same name, starring Keri Russell and written and directed by Adrienne Shelly.
The stage musical will follow “an inventive waitress trapped in a small-town diner and a loveless marriage. Pregnant and lonely, Jenna finds relief in making creatively-titled pies — and in a budding romance with an unlikely newcomer,” according to a press release. Diane Paulus (who of late can do no wrong and is building a spectacular Broadway directing career) will direct. The book is from Jessie Nelson, director and co-writer of the 2001 film “I Am Sam.”
“Waitress” will debut at Cambridge’s American Repertory Theatre on August 1.
