Cannes 2016: Jodie Foster Opens “Women in Motion” Program at Cannes

Jodie Foster will open the second “Women in Motion” program at the Cannes Film Festival, which begins today.

Foster is at the festival promoting her film “Money Monster,” which is screening out of competition.

The “Women in Motion” program launched at last year’s festival, and “aims to support women involved in cinema, highlight their contribution and encourage greater awareness of the need for diversity in the film industry.”

The “Women in Motion” Talks will begin May 12 and provide an opportunity to elaborate on last year’s conversations concerning women in cinema with the perspectives of speakers from other fields. In addition to the Talks, the second edition will also include the presentation of the “Women in Motion” Awards, designed to celebrate and encourage talented women in cinema: This year’s recipients of the honor are Susan Sarandon and Geena Davis.

The remainder of the Talks schedule will be revealed throughout the festival, but are set to include the following:

  • The “We Do It Together” team (WDIT), a production company created to finance and produce films, documentaries, TV and other forms of media, uniquely dedicated to the empowerment of women. Including Juliette Binoche, actress and WDIT Advisory Board member, Marianne Slot, producer of ELLES, former President of Cinema du Monde, WDIT Advisory Board member, Patricia Riggen, director of “Miracles from Heaven,” WDIT Advisory Board member, and Chiara Tilesi, producer and founder of WDIT.
  • The Geena Davis Institute on Gender Media, including its founder Geena Davis and its CEO Madeline Di Nonno.
  • Actress Susan Sarandon
  • Actress, producer, and director Salma Hayek Pinault
  • Director, producer and screenwriter, Lisa Azuelos
  • Su-Mei Thompson, President of Hong-Hong’s Women’s Foundation
  • Zainab Salbi, President of Women for Women, founder and host of the Nida’a’s show.
  • Actress, former model, designer and director Chloé Sevigny
  • Keri Putnam, Executive Director of the Sundance Institute
  • Producer Celine Rattray
  • Rena Ronson, Head of UTA Independent Film Group
  • Francine Raveney, PR and Press Relations Manager for the “European Women’s Audiovisual Network” (EWA)
