Ramona S. Diaz and Maria Ressa, the respective writer-director-producer and subject of the new documentary “A Thousand Cuts,” will sit down with the Girls Club this Thursday, August 13, at 7 p.m. EST.
Nowhere is the worldwide erosion of democracy, fueled by social media disinformation campaigns, more starkly evident than in the authoritarian regime of Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte. In “A Thousand Cuts” journalist Maria Ressa places the tools of the free press — and her freedom — on the line in defense of truth and democracy.
Diaz’s award-winning films include “Imelda” (2004), “The Learning” (2011), “Don’t Stop Believin’: Everyman’s Journey” (2012), and “Motherland” (2017). The latter won a Special Jury Award at the Sundance Film Festival and premiered at the Berlin International Film Festival. It was nominated for a Film Independent Spirit Award and a Peabody Award. Diaz was awarded a prestigious Guggenheim Fellowship in 2016, and is a current recipient of a United States Artists Fellowship.
Ressa is a Filipino-American journalist and author, best known for co-founding Rappler as its chief executive officer. She previously spent nearly two decades working as a lead investigative reporter in Southeast Asia for CNN.
