Julia Hart’s Sci-Fi “Fast Color” Acquired by Codeblack, Gugu Mbatha-Raw Stars

"Fast Color"

“Fast Color” is heading to theaters. Deadline reports that distribution rights to Julia Hart’s sci-fi have been obtained by Lionsgate’s label Codeblack Films. Gugu Mbatha-Raw (“The Cloverfield Paradox”) stars in the pic about a woman with superhuman abilities. “Fast Color” premiered at SXSW earlier this year.

Co-written and directed by Hart, the film is set in the near future and sees Ruth (Mbatha-Raw), a recovering drug addict, heading on the run after her special abilities are discovered. “Years after abandoning her family, the only place she has left to hide is home,” the source summarizes.

Hart, who made her feature directorial debut with 2016 teacher comedy “Miss Stevens,” is among “Fast Color’s” producers.

The film will open in select U.S. theaters on March 29.

Up next for Hart is “Stargirl.” She’ll direct Disney’s adaptation of the award-winning 2000 YA novel about a nonconformist teen. “Twilight” helmer Catherine Hardwicke was originally attached to the project.

“Tell female stories,” Hart said when we asked her advice for other female filmmakers. “I don’t know, maybe I’m not supposed to say that, but if we don’t, who will? Some of my favorite female characters were written by men. I’m not saying men can’t [write women]. I’m just saying, they’ve got men covered. They’ve got them covered in spades. So let’s tell a few stories about women while we’re here.”

Mbatha-Raw’s recent credits include “A Wrinkle in Time,” “Beauty and the Beast,” and “Miss Sloane.” Among her upcoming projects is “Come Away,” “Brave” co-director Brenda Chapman’s live-action debut. A prequel to the stories of “Peter Pan” and “Alice in Wonderland,” the film also stars Angelina Jolie and “Selma’s” David Oyelowo.
