“Gloria Bell” won’t be introduced to audiences for a few weeks, but she’s already found fans in A24. The company acquired U.S. rights to the Julianne Moore-starrer in advance of its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival. A spring 2019 release is planned, according to Variety.
An English-language remake of 2013’s “Gloria,” the film centers on “a free-spirited divorcée (Moore) who spends her days at a straight-laced office job and her nights on the dance floors of various Los Angeles clubs. After meeting Arnold (John Turturro) on a night out, she finds herself thrust into an unexpected new romance,” the source details.
Sebastián Lelio — who scored an Oscar this year in the foreign-language category for “A Fantastic Woman” — directed the original “Gloria” and stepped behind the camera once again for “Gloria Bell.”
“I really admire the films that A24 has championed,” Lelio said in a statement. “The company is strong and daring, which I think matches beautifully Gloria Bell’s attitude about life.”
A24 added, “Lelio has made a completely heartwarming and winning new film, building upon his own original work while creating something fresh and universal. Julianne Moore gives one of her very best performances in the central role, creating an incredibly complex and nuanced character that the audience roots for at every turn. We are so thrilled to be working with Sebastián and Julianne and to be bringing this wonderful movie out into the world.”
Moore won an Oscar in 2015 for Alzheimer’s drama “Still Alice.” She previously received nods for “Far From Heaven,” “The Hours,” “The End of the Affair,” and “Boogie Nights.” Her recent credits include “Suburbicon” and “Wonderstruck.” She’ll play Gloria Steinem in “My Life on the Road,” Julie Taymor’s adaptation of the feminist icon’s memoir.
