Julianne Moore is set to star in another Stephen King adaptation. The Oscar winner, who appeared in a 2013 remake of “Carrie,” has signed on to topline “Lisey’s Story” for Apple. Inspired by King’s 2006 psychological horror novel of the same name, the project has caused a “multiple outlet bidding war,” according to The Hollywood Reporter. Apple came out victorious, handing out a straight-to-series eight-episode order.
Described as “a deeply personal thriller,” “Lisey’s Story” takes place two years after the death of its titular character’s husband. “The story explores a series of events that causes her to begin facing amazing realities about her husband that she had repressed and forgotten,” the source hints. No directors are attached at this point.
“Lisey’s Story” marks Moore’s first series-regular role since her her stint on “As the World Turns,” for which she won a Daytime Emmy in 1988. Moore later snagged an Emmy for portraying Sarah Palin in 2012 HBO film “Game Change.” A five-time Oscar nominee, she took home the trophy in 2015 for “Still Alice.” She also received nods for “Far From Heaven,” “The Hours,” “The End of the Affair,” and “Boogie Nights.”
Moore’s latest pic, “Gloria Bell,” is in theaters now. The comedy centers on a woman who spends her days at a conventional office job and her nights hitting the dance floor at nightclubs in LA.
A staunch supporter of Time’s Up, Moore has said that it “takes a long time to turn a boat around, you know?” She explained, “We’re just talking about a year and a half. It’s not very long, but … many, many more women are producing and directing now, so that’s great. People are making an effort to hire more female directors.”
Other Apple series in the works include a morning show-set drama with Reese Witherspoon and Jennifer Aniston, an Octavia Spencer-led true crime drama, and a drama about four generations of a Korean immigrant family based on the acclaimed bestselling novel “Pachinko.”
