Kai Yu Wu is bringing “Empire of the Wild” to the small screen with the help of the horror novel’s author, Cherie Dimaline. The duo are working with Fabel Entertainment on a series adaptation of Dimaline’s 2019 novel. Deadline broke the news.
Inspired by Indigenous folklore, the story follows Joan “a year after her husband’s disappearance as she desperately tries to bring him back from the nefarious religious organization and supernatural forces that have claimed him,” the source details.
Dimaline is Indigenous. She’s currently working on the FX series “The Retreat.” Her 2017 YA dystopian novel “The Marrow Thieves” won the Governor General’s Award and the Kirkus Prize for Young Readers.
“Because we are the people of story, it is a great honor for me to be called a Métis writer. It denotes a title, an honor, and a certain knowledge. In fact, I feel demoted when I’m referred to as only a Canadian writer,” Dimaline has said. “My community has struggled and survived, and I’m enormously proud to be able to carry our voices forward. I can’t speak for every writer, but for myself, I am a writer. But being called an Indigenous author is like having a PhD at the end of your signature.”
Wu has written for “The Flash” and “Hannibal.” She recently created the Netflix series “The Ghost Bride.”
