Karen Cinorre has kicked off production on her feature directorial debut. Titled “Mayday,” the project is described as “a fantastical female-driven action film.” The indie pic stars Juliette Lewis (“Ma”), Grace Van Patten (“Maniac”), and Mia Goth (“High Life”). Deadline broke the news.
“Mayday” sees a young woman named Ana (Van Patten) “transported to a dreamlike and dangerous land where she joins up with a band of female soldiers engaged in a never-ending war along a rugged coast. Though she finds strength in this exhilarating world, she comes to realize that she’s not the killer they want her to be and must use her newfound power to try to fight her way back to life,” the source hints.
Cinorre is among the project’s producers. She previously wrote and directed shorts “Last Date” and “Plume” and produced the former.
Other pics about warrior women on our radar include “Warrior Queen of Jhansi,” which tells the story of a 24-year-old Indian general who leads a battle against the British Empire, and “The Woman King,” centering on an all-female military unit in one of the most powerful states of Africa in the 18th and 19th centuries. Both projects are based on true stories. The former hits theaters November 15 and the latter hasn’t begun filming yet. Viola Davis and Lupita Nyong’o will star.
