Kari Skogland is making her way from Gilead to the Marvel universe. The Emmy-nominated “Handmaid’s Tale” director has signed on to helm six-part Disney+ miniseries “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier,” Deadline confirms. “Avengers: Endgame’s” Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan are locked in to star, and “Captain America: Civil War’s” Emily Van Vamp and Daniel Bruhl are reportedly in talks to join.
Scheduled to air in August 2020, there’s no official synopsis for “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier” just yet. The source has heard word that “Mackie’s accepting the shield from Captain America at the end of ‘Avengers: Endgame’ will figure into the miniseries, but the studio had no comment on where it goes.”
Skogland won a BAFTA and received an Emmy nod for her work on Margaret Atwood adaptation “The Handmaid’s Tale.” “The Walking Dead,” “The Americans,” and “The L Word” are among her many other TV credits.
Released earlier this year, “Captain Marvel” made history as the first Marvel title to feature a female protagonist and be directed by a woman. Brie Larson played the superhero and Anna Boden co-directed with Ryan Fleck. The ’90s-set origin story has taken in more than $1.12 billion worldwide.
More women-directed Marvel features are on the way. Cate Shortland is signed on to helm a standalone “Black Widow” pic starring Scarlett Johansson and Chloé Zhao will step behind the camera for “The Eternals,” an epic story about a race of immortal beings.
Every episode of Season 2 of Marvel’s “Jessica Jones” TV series was directed by a woman.
