Kate McKinnon has signed on to star in another small-screen adaptation of a podcast. Earlier this year Hulu handed out a series order to “The Dropout,” a limited series inspired by the podcast of the same name. The “SNL” star will lead and exec produce the story about the rise and fall of Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes, the world’s youngest female self-made billionaire. Now word comes that the Emmy winner is set to topline and exec produce a TV adaptation of “Joe Exotic” from Universal Productions and Wondery. The Hollywood Reporter confirmed the news.
“‘Joe Exotic’ revolves around what happens when big cat enthusiast Carole Baskin (McKinnon) learns that fellow exotic animal lover Joe ‘Exotic’ Schreibvogel is breeding and using his big cats for profit,” the source summarizes. “She sets out to shut down his venture, inciting a quickly escalating rivalry. But Carole has a checkered past of her own, and when the claws come out, Joe will stop at nothing to expose her hypocrisy. The results prove deadly.”
Currently in “the early stages of development,” the series is not attached to a network yet. A writer and director have yet to be determined.
McKinnon won an Emmy for her work on “SNL.” “Yesterday,” “The Spy Who Dumped Me,” and “Rough Night” are among her recent film credits. You can catch the “Ghostbusters” actress next in “Bombshell.” Set to hit theaters December 20, the drama is inspired by the women who took down Fox News head Roger Ailes.
