“My Brilliant Friend” fans, take note: another series based on a book about a complicated female friendship with a long history is on the way. Katherine Heigl will follow up her two-season run on “Suits” with Netflix’s “Firefly Lane,” a series adaptation of Kristin Hannah’s novel of the same name. Deadline confirmed the news.
Published in 2008, “Firefly Lane” tells the story of inseparable BFFs and their intense bond, which has spanned “four tumultuous decades.”
Heigl will play Tully. Described as a”force of nature,” she “bears the scars of a traumatic childhood” and is “dogged by inner loneliness, even as she goes on to fabulous fame and fortune as a journalist and talk show host.” The “Grey’s Anatomy” alumna is also an exec producer on “Firefly Lane.”
Maggie Friedman (“No Tomorrow”) is serving as showrunner on the project and is also among its exec producers.
“What I particularly loved about writing this novel was the memories it evoked,” Hannah has said of “Firefly Lane.” “Fads, fashion, products, songs, novels, and news stories — this book contains all of that. In these pages, I was able to return to my youth, the disco era, and drink Boone’s Farm with my heroine … tease my hair and dance to Madonna, [and] jump into my fictional suburban world and run carpool one more time. Not only does the story follow the friendship between two women, it also tracks the ever changing face of the Pacific Northwest. It also contains my most important and powerful message to date,” she hinted.
The ninth and final season of “Suits” kicks off July 17 on USA Network. Heigl plays Samantha Wheeler on the legal drama.
