Writer-actress Kathleen Robertson has scored a promising gig. The former “Boss” star has signed on to adapt “The Possibilities,” Kaui Hart Hemmings’ follow up novel to “The Descendants,” for Fox Searchlight. Deadline reports that Jason Reitman (“Up in the Air,” “Juno”) is planning to direct the project, which centers on a grieving mother who loses her son in an avalanche and forms a friendship with a mysterious young girl.
Alexander Payne’s 2011 adaptation of “The Descendants” won him and his co-writers on the project an Academy Award. The family drama received four other Oscar nods including Best Picture, and grossed over $175 million at the box office.
Robertson, whose acting credits include “Murder in the First,” “Bates Motel,” and the original “90210,” completed the Writers Guild’s Showrunners Training Program. The source writes that she “recently adapted the 1994 satire ‘Swimming With Sharks’ for E! with Kevin Spacey executive producing and has her own dramedy ‘Your Time Is Up’ set up at Lifetime with Christina Applegate set to star.” Both projects hail from Lionsgate TV.
Helen Estabrook (“Casual,” “Whiplash”) will produce “The Possibilities” along with Reitman.
