Katie Holmes’ feature directorial debut has found a home. Gravitas Ventures has acquired the North American rights to “All We Had,” Holmes’ mother-daughter drama that premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in April. The “Batman Begins” actress also produced the film, and stars.
As an official press release describes, “All We Had” centers on a 15-year-old (Stefania Owen) who “makes the best of her mother Rita’s (Holmes) hard luck. From escaping an abusive boyfriend, to living out of their car, and going flat broke — the duo continues to find themselves in search of a home and stability.”
The film is based on Annie Weatherwax’s 2014 novel of the same name.
“I opened the book and I was drawn to this story because of the authentic characters and their struggles,” Holmes told Women and Hollywood. She shared, “I want people to walk away from this film with more empathy for others. And hopefully with a greater understanding and patience for what people endure because of circumstances that are out of their control. You never truly know what is going on in someone’s life.”
Holmes previously directed 2015’s “Eternal Princess.” The doc short centers on a record-breaking Olympic gymnast.
“As an actress, I have been honored to work on sets my entire career with directors who have inspired me,” said Holmes in a statement. “I have always wanted to direct so that I could be not only a part of the process, but to bring a story to life from inception to completion. I was so fortunate on my directorial debut to be surrounded by an incredibly talented cast and crew that supported my vision. This was extremely gratifying to me as an artist and I cannot wait to direct my next film.”
“All We Had” hits theaters and On Demand December 9. Judy Greer (“Arrested Development”) and Eve Lindley (“Mr. Robot”) co-star.
Holmes’ recent acting credits include “Ray Donovan,” “Touched with Fire,” and “Woman in Gold.”
