Keeley Hawes won’t be standing behind a bodyguard in her next gig. The “Bodyguard” actress will take center stage as a detective in ITV crime drama “Honour.” Deadline confirmed the news.
Based on a true story, the two-parter tells the story of Caroline Goode, the detective who led the investigation into Banaz Mahmod’s honour-killing. The 20-year-old Londoner was murdered by her family when she found new love after leaving the physically and sexually abusive man she was forced to marry.
Gwyneth Hughes (“The Girl,” “Vanity Fair”) will pen the project.
“In a time where honour killings are still rife, it is critical to shine a light on such an important subject,” said Hawes. “Banaz Mahmod’s story, and DCI Goode’s subsequent investigation, is certainly one that needs to be told and I am proud to be a part of it.”
Hughes added, “Banaz Mahmod met her brutish death on the orders of her own father and uncle, which I find profoundly unsettling. That this story is ultimately so uplifting is down to the sheer heroism and dedication of the police officers who hunted down her killers. Caroline Goode and her team felt real love for this girl they’d never met. I found their unusual warmth and humanity deeply moving.”
Hawes played a controversial politician who seeks protection from a war vet dealing with PTSD in “Bodyguard.” The critically-acclaimed BBC series brought in huge viewership numbers.
“The Missing,” “Line of Duty,” and “Death at a Funeral” are among Hawes’ previous credits. She’ll join Keira Knightley, Gugu Mbatha-Raw (“Fast Color”), and Jessie Buckley (“Wild Rose”) in Philippa Lowthorpe’s “Misbehavior,” an upcoming pic about a group of women who disrupt the 1970 Miss World beauty competition in London.
