Kelly Oxford’s feature debut has secured distribution. A press release announced that MTV Studios snagged worldwide rights to “Pink Skies Ahead,” which made its world premiere at AFI Fest this past weekend.
Penned by Oxford, the semi-autobiographical coming-of-age story is based on “No Real Danger,” an essay from Oxford’s second book, “When You Find Out the World Is Against You.” Jessica Barden (“The End of the F***ing World”) stars as Winona, a recent college dropout who moves back in with her parents and gets diagnosed with an anxiety disorder.
“I’m thrilled my directorial debut found a great home at MTV Studios. One out of five people experience mental illness and we need to portray this in a real way for those who live with it directly or indirectly. I’m excited to finally share Winona with the world,” said Oxford.
In a recent interview with IndieWire, the Twitter sensation discussed what it was like to adapt her essay. “I definitely wrote a bunch of plot that absolutely never happened,” she explained. “But I made sure that it was synchronistic to what had actually happened in my life, the way I avoided my diagnosis, how I busied my time with things that sort of weren’t important and weren’t helping me just to avoid my anxiety.”
Oxford’s first book, “Everything Is Perfect When You’re a Liar,” hit shelves in 2013. The “Busy Tonight” alumna has been tapped to helm “Son of a Bitch,” a comedy about a young stoner who discovers she’s pregnant, for HBO Max.
