Kerry Washington has landed another high-profile role.
The “Scandal” star will play law professor Anita Hill in “Confirmation,” a HBO movie about Clarence Thomas’ Supreme Court-nomination hearings. The incredibly brave and brilliant Hill, who suffered indignities from politicians and the public while crusading against sexual harassment in the workplace on the Senate floor, is most certainly overdue for the biopic treatment. (A 2013 documentary about the hearings, titled “Anita,” was made by Oscar-winning director Freida Lee Mock.) Washington is also set to star in Amma Asante’s next film, the studio thriller “Unforgettable.”
“Confirmation” will be penned by Oscar-nominated screenwriter Susannah Grant (“Erin Brockovich”), who will also EP. Though the production team already seems to be circling around Sundance darling Rick Famuyiwa to direct, we can’t think of another project better suited for a female filmmaker.
HBO is evidently wooing female viewers with recently announced movies like “Ms.,” a biopic of Gloria Steinem and the founding of Ms. magazine starring Marisa Tomei, and “Battle of the Sexes,” about tennis star Billie Jean King (played by Elizabeth Banks) defeating Bobby Riggs in a highly televised game.
