Over the weekend at the NAACP Image Awards, Kerry Washington swept the show. She won three awards.
She won for outstanding actress in a drama series for her role as Olivia Pope on Scandal, and also picked up the supporting actress award for Django Unchained—an award that Washington said did not belong to her.
This award does not belong to me. It belongs to our ancestors. We shot this film on a slave plantation, and they were with us along every step of the way.
And then she also took home the President’s Award which is to recognize special achievement and public service. Washington speaks out frequently in support of women’s rights, was a proud supporter of President Obama’s re-election campaign—speaking at the 2012 Democratic National Convention. She’s currently on Obama’s committee for the Arts and Humanities.
It’s great to see Washington get recognition for both her work and her activism.
