Stars Sandra Oh and Jodie Comer are returning for Season 2 of “Killing Eve,” but a major shakeup is in the works behind the scenes of the spy thriller. Creator Phoebe Waller-Bridge is stepping down as lead writer of the BBC series, and will be replaced with “Call the Midwife” alumna Emerald Fennell. The “Fleabag” actress and creator will remain on board as an executive producer. “Killing Eve’s” eight-episode freshman season was helmed by three men, but two women have been hired to join the directing team for its second installment. Lisa Bruhlmann (“Blue My Mind”) and Francesca Gregorini (“Electric Dreams”) will step behind the camera with Season 1 director Damon Thomas. Variety broke the news.
Best known for her role as Patsy on “Call the Midwife,” Fennell has written “Careful How You Go,” a short which she also directed, and episodes of British sitcom “Drifters.”
The source specifies that Waller-Bridge brought Fennell on board, and was also instrumental in Bruhlmann and Gregorini’s hiring. It seems she played a vital role in ensuring that the project features prominent women both on and off the screen.
Waller-Bridge is up for her first-ever Emmy for “Killing Eve.” She’s in the running for Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series. The busy multi-hyphenate is also working on the upcoming second season of “Fleabag,” and has received a pilot order from HBO for “Run,” a comedic thriller about former lovers she co-created with frequent collaborator Vicky Jones.
Oh made history with her Emmy nom for “Killing Eve.” The former “Grey’s Anatomy” star is the first Asian woman to be up for Lead Actress in a Drama Series.
“With ‘Killing Eve,’ Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Sandra Oh, Jodie Comer, and the enormously talented team created something that cut through the noise with the same elegant efficiency as a poisoned hairpin,” said Sarah Barnett, president of BBC America. “We are filled with excitement and anticipation for the surprises in store as we move into Season 2.”
“Killing Eve” was renewed for a second season before a single episode of its first aired. The show about an MI5 officer (Oh) and the assassin she’s obsessed with (Comer) is a hit with both audiences and critics. “The finale delivered a series high of 1.25 million viewers in Nielsen live+3 ratings, up 86 percent from the premiere,” Variety details.
Season 2 of “Killing Eve” doesn’t have a premiere date yet.
