“$ugar,” a dark comedy about Stanford sugar babies, has landed at Hulu following a four-way bidding war. The Hollywood Reporter confirms Kimi Howl Lee’s show is in early development at the streamer.
Written and produced by Lee, “‘$ugar’ centers on the accidental formation of a Sugar Baby ring at the elite college intent on bringing down the titans of the tech industry and empowering its members,” the source summarizes. “Via sex-capades and corporate espionage, ‘$ugar’ explores the ways in which young co-eds are ‘leaning in’ and embracing their sexuality in order to gain access to the exclusive echelons of the male-dominated tech world.”
Sarah Condon (“Dare Me”) and Micah Schraft (“Mrs. America”) are executive producing.
Lee previously explored the world of sugar babies in her short “Sugar.” The Stanford aluma won the Best LGBTQ+ Short prize at Palm Springs International ShortFest for “Kama’āina.” She is a writer for “Locke and Key” and the upcoming Amazon show “The Expatriates.” Lee is now in pre-production on her feature “Nightshade.”
Another story about a sugar baby/college student “Shiva Baby,” is now in theaters and available on VOD. Emma Seligman wrote and directed the cringe comedy and Rachel Sennott stars.
