NBC has ordered a put pilot from “Shameless” executive producer Krista Vernoff, Deadline reports. Along with her “Shameless” co-producer John Wells, Vernoff will executive produce “Flight Risk,” for which she has also written the pilot.
“Flight Risk” follows lawyer Maddie Silva, a popular and funny prosecutor whose “take no mercy” approach has earned her the nickname “The Shark.” As Deadline continues, “When she loses her temper in a divorce mediation, comically threatening to have her soon-to-be-ex-husband killed and he turns up dead the next day, she has to go on the run and turn to a criminal she has been prosecuting to help her clear her name. Maddie’s humanity and sense of humor remain intact as she is forced to compromise every moral she has — and question everything she ever thought she knew.”
Vernoff’s semi-autobiographical series “Studio City,” which was inspired by her own experiences as the daughter of a celebrity drug dealer, was given a pilot at Fox last year, but did not end up being ordered for series. Here’s hoping “Flight Risk” has better luck.
Vernoff has previously written for “Charmed,” “Grey’s Anatomy,” and “Private Practice,” and produced for all three as well. She also has one short film, “Stars,” under her directorial belt, so perhaps we’ll be seeing Vernoff helming an episode of “Flight Risk” if NBC greenlights the series.
